Despite popular belief, it’s not just cold, wet weather that Scotland has to offer! Och nooo! Visit Scotland and you will encounter stunning lochs, rolling glens and lots of wildlife – so why wait?

Don’t ya just love packing the car up and heading out on a good old road trip? This ‘bumper blog’ takes you along on my road trip, starting in Glasgow and finishing in Inveraray – covering 1463 miles round trip from our home in Manchester, England.

Inverness is the capital city of the Highlands and has a reputation as one of the best places to live in Scotland. It’s a bustling city set amongst the quiet mountains and riverside with great shopping and plenty for the foodies.

It’s no lie that when planning our road trip, I was most excited about seeing the famous Loch Ness! Naturally a bit of Nessie-hunting was first on the itinerary. But did I spot Nessie?

We spent a whole day, from dawn ‘til dusk, driving up the Moray Firth; a stretch of coastline boasting beaches, cute villages. We visited Spey Bay, Lossiemouth, Nairn and Fochabers and took the opportunity to see some of Scotland’s wildlife up close, especially the seals!

Albeit not an island, nor black – it’s here were you can spot dolphins at Chanonry Point, cute cottages in Cromarty and try a bit of whisky-nosing in Glen Ord. Sound good?

The North Coast 500 is often referred to as Scotland’s answer to America’s Route 66, taking in just over 500 miles of the fantastic North Highlands coastline. It’s also home to the infamous Bealach Ne Ba and its hairpin bends…drive it if you dare!

Bubbling brooks, waterfalls, wild woodland and the impressive Grampian Mountains – just some of the reasons why Queen Victoria was so drawn to this part of Scotland and chose to make it Royal Deeside. If it’s good enough for the king, it’s good enough for me….

Inveraray boasts a prime location on the western shores of the amazing Loch Fyne. As soon as you first set eyes on it, you see why it’s described as ‘picture book’. Spend time walking on the beach and in woodland, visiting the (Downton Abbey-famous) Inveraray Castle and going to jail. Yes, you read that right!

If you’re willing to be adventurous (and catch an overnight ferry or flight), then the Shetland Isles may be your next trip: Dramatic landscapes, remote beaches, wildlife….and vikings. Yes vikings!
No problem! Hope you have a great trip!
